COURSE BACKGROUND
The qualification at this level is foundational and generic, allowing maximum mobility between qualifications. Apart from the workplace needs the qualification will address, it is also designed as an entry-level qualification into most further education and training fields, because of the wide application of End User Computing in any environment.
The purpose of this qualification is to teach the qualifying student the basic knowledge and understanding of using ICT in an organization, with particular emphasis on Microsoft Word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.
Individuals who enter this field must have the ability to learn from experience and apply that knowledge to future troubleshooting situations. This programmer teaches all the fundamentals and IT principles of computers and empowers learners to excel confidently in the digital world of End User Computing.
End-User Computing provides a framework to develop skills that will enable you to become competent in End User Computing. It introduces theoretical concepts of End User Computing and requires the application thereof, to develop a range of skills that will enable learners to be better-informed workers in their chosen industry.
Additionally, the End User Computing NQF Level 3 qualification will give you the basics that you need for a firm academic foundation, even if you choose to pursue another qualification in the future. Apart from giving you a headstart over other candidates in the workplace, it is also designed as an entry-level qualification into most further education and training fields.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
Often, many of the skills and knowledge used in the IT profession have been acquired through short courses and on-the-job training.
Recognition of prior learning will allow learners with these competencies to be assessed and recognized formally.
Course Outline
Module 1: Introduction to Computer
Knowing how to use a computer is one of the basic skills needed to succeed in the workplace and in life. In order to use a computer, it is necessary to understand how the computer works.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Describe the components of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
- Describe the hardware components of a personal computer
- Explain computer architecture elements
- Explain the organisation of a computer.
- Describe software for personal computers.
- Describe information networks in relation to ICT
- Describe the design constraints in the design of instruction sets for computers.
- Describe ergonomic principles for computer workstations.
- Explain health and safety when working with computers.
- Set up a computer workstation taking ergonomic principles and health and safety issues into account.
Module 2: Microsoft Word
Word 2013 is the word processing application in the Microsoft Office 2013 suite. Learn how to use Word 2013’s powerful tools for creating professional and eye-catching documents.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Insert and delete sections within a document while maintaining document integrity.
- Insert, edit and delete headers and footers within a document.
- Facilitate online review of documents using comments and tracking changes.
- Create and use Styles in a document

- Format documents, including text, paragraphs and pages

Module 3: Microsoft Excel
Excel is the spreadsheet application in the Microsoft Office suite. This module will show you how to use the powerful tools in Excel for organizing, visualizing, and calculating your data.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of spreadsheets.
- Create, open and save spreadsheets.
- Produce a spreadsheet from a given specification.
- Format and edit a spreadsheet.
- Check spelling and grammar in a spreadsheet.
- Print a spreadsheet using features specific to spreadsheets.
- Adjust settings to customise the view and preferences of the spreadsheet application.
- Work with multiple worksheets.
- Apply formulae to worksheets to provide alternative solutions to a problem.
- Apply simple built-in functions of the spreadsheet application to the given problem.
- Apply formatting to a spreadsheet applicable to the given problem.
- Use special effects to improve the presentation of the spreadsheet.

Module 4: Microsoft Powerpoint
PowerPoint 2013 is the presentation program in the Microsoft Office 2013 suite. This module teaches you how to create amazing slide presentations that can integrate images, video, narration, charts, and more.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Prepare and produce a presentation according to a specified brief
- Adjust settings to customise the view and preferences of the presentation application.

Module 5: Microsoft Access
Access database is not just a place to store your data; it’s a tool for creating custom application that covers the entire interaction between you, your team, and the data. In this module, you will learn how to use the collection of tools that allow you to efficiently process data, move data in and out of the database, maintain quality of the data and ensure that it remains consistently entered and valid.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Understand the principles of databases.
- Open and save a simple existing database.
- Produce and edit a simple database from given specifications.
- Enter data into a simple database table from given specifications.
- Modify the design of a database table.
- Sort and search for records in a database table.

Module 6: Microsoft Outlook and Internet
Outlook is a personal information management application that allows you to email, schedule your calendar, manage contacts and more. It is part of the MS Office suite and is commonly used in the workplace. This module shows you how to use Outlook functions, as well as how to become Internet savvy by knowing how to browse smartly, maintain your safety and network socially while online.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-

Module 7: Effective Writing
Most business communication is indigestible. The main reason for this is that there are no globally agreed standards of clarity and readability: everyone does their own thing and the result is a mix of different styles, layouts and structures. In this module, you will learn how to communicate systematically and effectively in the business environment.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Understand that language has certain features and conventions that can be manipulated

Module 8: Report Writing
This learning programme leads to a greater understanding of presenting information in report format and planning research.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Relate the purpose, content, form, frequency and recipients of a range of reports.
- Identify information sources & organizational procedures for obtaining & distributing information.
- Compile reports related to a selected business function.
- Liase with relevant parties and verify that reported information is in accordance with requirements.
- The plan identifies the topic, objectives, and scope of the research.
- Conduct research of a computer topic using computer technology.

Module 9: Oral Communication
This module covers the essentials of effective oral communication. This includes how to speak and listen effectively for improved interpersonal communication with your customers, colleagues, supervisors and managers.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Speak effectively in formal and informal workplace situations
- Develop an effective business presentation
- Use visual aids to enhance the presentation
- Deliver a business presentation effectively
Module 10: Managing My Finance
This module introduces people to financial concepts from both an individual and national perspective. Its ultimate purpose is to empower you to manage your personal finances and achieve your financial goals.

- Better understand certain financial concepts and terms so that you can make intelligent choices.
- Manage your finances through better budgeting
- In addition, we introduce you to various instruments that can help you achieve your financial goals and help you

Module 11: Practical Mathematics
Practical mathematics has been a human activity for as far back as written records go. Through the use of logical reasoning mathematics has evolved from counting, calculating, measurement, and the study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Today, mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Ascertain how units of measure and speed and acceleration will assist us in planning and scheduling various work- related tasks;
- Determine how to effectively apply 2- and 3 dimensional shapes and scale diagram principles to aid us in effectively utilizing space available to us in the working environment;
- Discover how to calculate international time zones and pin-point locations for potential international business partners or clients to allow for more effective and optimal scheduling of our workforce.
Module 12: Statistics
In the workplace today, changes take place very rapidly. To take advantage of these changes, decisions need to be made very quickly. Information is vital and must be collected and processed very quickly so that managers can make informed decisions. They need to understand what is going on for their customers and in their organisation.
Statistics is the crystal ball that can help to explain what happened in the past and what is likely to happen in future. Statistics is the science that tries to make sense of large amounts of seemingly unconnected data and helps to draw the line between the many dots of numbers. The data collected in a statistical study can be used to answer questions such as:-
- How can we improve customer satisfaction?
- Which customers are most likely to buy our products?
- What are the most frequent types of requests?
- How many staff are we going to need in the future, at any given day at any given hour?
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-

Module 13: Understanding of HIV/AIDS in the workplace
The purpose of this programme is to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS in a workplace, and its effects on a business sub-sector, own organisation and a specific workplace.
On completion of this module, you should be able to:-
- Understanding the effects of HIV/AIDS on the immune system.
- Knowing how HIV/AIDS is transmitted.
- Knowing what behaviour is safe and what behaviour caries the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission.
- Knowing what guidelines and assistance are available to support workers with HIV/AIDS and recognise own role in creating a caring work environment.
- Understanding the implications of the HIV/AIDS pandemic for society, the economy, a business sub-sector, an organisation and a specific workplace
Module 14: Managing Teams
There is a big focus on teams and teamwork in the world of work right now. Many organizations function entirely on cross-functional project teams. It is important for you to be able to function effectively as part of a team. In order to do this, you need to understand what teams are and how they work.

Students need to have access to the Microsoft Office Suite (inclusive of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Assessment is conducted as both Formative Assessment and Summative Assessments.
The Formative Assessment is covered as Continuous Assessment Tests and compilation
of a Portfolio of Evidence by the student. The Summative Assessment takes place as a
National Summative exam for First and Second Semesters. It is compulsory for all students
to complete WIL for completion of the programme.
